Debbie and Jill are the owners/nurse educators of Safety Basics LLC. Both look forward to working with you to provide quality child passenger safety education, CPR, AED, and First Aid training, children's safety classes and parenting education in the St. Louis metro area. The owners have been involved in community education for a number of years and wanted to make their courses easily accessible for individuals and groups. They maintain their credentials and that of their workers to offer the highest quality and up to date information in all of their courses. EDUCATION:
- Debbie received her nursing degree from St. Louis University in 1985 and has been a registered nurse in Missouri for 26 years. Jill graduated with a diploma from Missouri Baptist School of Nursing in 1986 and received her BSN from Maryville University in 2006. She has been a registered nurse in Missouri for 25 years.
EXPERIENCE:
- Debbie started her medical career working in a family medicine practice and then an outpatient clinic for adults and children. She has practiced pediatric nursing at Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in St Louis and St. John's Mercy Children's Hospital in St. Louis as a staff nurse caring for newborns through adolescents. Jill has practiced neonatal nursing at St. John's Mercy Children's Hospital in St. Louis and maternity nursing at St. Clare Hospital in St. Louis caring for mothers and full term and premature infants. Jill also has experience working the access call center at St. Louis Children's Hospital.
- Both have experience as nurse educators coordinating community and hospital-based education programs, Debbie for fourteen years and Jill for eight years. Together they created curriculum for and taught parenting, babysitting, home alone, infant care, children's first aid, children's surgery preparation, nutrition, school age medical explorers, CPR, first aid, and childhood injury prevention courses.
- Both are moms of 3 children and draw on their own experiences when teaching since they know the joys and challenges of raising children today.
CERTIFICATIONS:
- Debbie completed the American Heart Association Basic Life Support Instructor Course in 1992 and Jill in 1995. Both have been active CPR instructors teaching parents, businesses and health-care workers. American Heart Association instructors must renew their certification every 2 years. Jill renewed in 2011 and Debbie in 2010. They are affiliated with Mercy Hospital St. Louis American Heart Association Training Center. All Safety Basics CPR instructors have completed the AHA 2010 Science Guidelines Update and are teaching the new 2010 CPR techniques.
- Debbie attended the Emergency Cardiovascular Care Update Conference in Dec. 2010.
- Debbie became an Active Parenting Educator in 1992 based on the work of Dr. Michael Popkin. She has facilitated "1234 Parents", "Active Parenting", and "Free the Horses" self esteem groups and has participated in "The Encouraging Parent" trainer workshops by Dr. Rod Kennedy.
- Jill has trained and taught "1234 Parents" by Active Parenting Publishers and is trained in the "Happiest Baby on the Block" program by Dr. Harvey Karp.
- Debbie and Jill became American Heart Association First Aid Instructors in 2002.
- Debbie and Jill are strong child safety advocates and attended the Sit Safe program in 2004 to become National Child Passenger Safety Technicians. Re-certification is required every two years. They helped to create and coordinate a local hospital based car seat fitting station to ensure that every baby's ride home was safe in their car seat. They attended Special Needs Car Seat Training for transporting children with special health care needs in 2008. Debbie completed her training to be a certified instructor to teach the National Child Passenger Safety Technician course in 2009. She helps teach area Child Passenger Safety Technician courses. They have been members of the St. Louis Safe Kids organization to help promote child safety in the community since 2005. Debbie recently attended the Midwest Regional Child Passenger Safety Conference in May of 2011. She attended and presented at the National Child Passenger Safety Conference: KIDZ in Motion in Orlando in Aug 2011 on the future of child passenger safety services.
- Julie Eldridge is a member of our instructor team. She brings her expertise to many of our CPR and children's courses and performs child safety seat checks.
